A Keepsafe alternative that never goes online

Keepsafe is the best known vault on Android. Here's where it differs from Dobr.

Short answer

Keepsafe is a mature app with a private cloud, a fake PIN, intruder alerts and tens of millions of installs. It's free with ads, and the extras come with Premium. Dobr is smaller and does less: no cloud, no ads and no internet permission at all, so your files physically can't leave the phone.

Keepsafe has been around since 2011 and has tens of millions of installs, so it's the app most people try first. It's a good app. Whether it's the right one depends on what you want a vault to do.

Keepsafe Dobr
Unlock PIN or fingerprint A pattern on a 4 by 4 grid
Cloud Private cloud, 200 items free, more with Premium None. No internet permission
Decoy Fake PIN with Premium Extra vaults with Unlimited
Intruder alerts With Premium No
Ads Yes, in the free version No
Price Free with ads, Premium monthly, yearly or lifetime Free for one vault of 35 items, Unlimited weekly, yearly or lifetime

Where Keepsafe wins

The cloud. Keepsafe can sync your vault to its private cloud, so a lost phone doesn't mean lost photos, and you can get them back on a new device. Dobr can't do that, on purpose.

Extras. Intruder alerts show who tried to get in, trash recovery brings back things you deleted by accident, and Safe Send shares a photo that disappears after it's viewed.

Track record. More than a decade on the Play Store counts for something.

Where Dobr wins

Nothing to leak. A cloud is convenient, and it's also a copy of your private photos on someone else's servers. Dobr has no internet permission at all. You can check that on its Play Store listing under App permissions. If nothing can be uploaded, nothing can be breached later.

No ads. Keepsafe's free version shows ads and uses analytics tools. Dobr has neither, free or paid.

Any file. Dobr keeps PDFs, scans and text files alongside your photos and videos.

Who should pick which

Pick Keepsafe if you want a backup in the cloud and don't mind an account and ads in the free version. Pick Dobr if you'd rather your private photos never leave the phone at all, and you're happy to keep your own backup of anything irreplaceable.
