Keeping a crypto seed phrase on your phone

Best kept off the phone. If you must keep a copy on it, keep it out of your camera roll.

Short answer

The safest place for a seed phrase is offline, written on paper or stamped in metal and stored somewhere safe. If you keep a copy on your phone, never leave it as a screenshot in your camera roll. Put it in an encrypted vault with no internet access and its own lock.

Your recovery phrase, also called a seed phrase, is your wallet. Anyone who has those 12 or 24 words can move everything in it, from anywhere, and it can't be undone.

Why the camera roll is the worst place for it

  • It syncs. If photo backup is on, your seed phrase is now in your Google account, and on every device signed in to it.
  • Apps can read it. Any app you've given photo access can see your screenshots, and photo search can find text in images.
  • It's easy to send by accident. One wrong tap while sharing a batch of photos.

The safer order

  1. Offline, on paper or metal, stored somewhere safe from fire and water. This is what most wallet makers recommend.
  2. A hardware wallet, with the recovery phrase kept offline as above.
  3. If you must keep a copy on your phone, keep it encrypted, behind a lock nobody else knows, in an app that can't go online.

How to do option 3 properly

  1. Write the words into a text file, or take a photo of your written copy. Don't use a cloud notes app.
  2. Open Dobr and tap Add, then Files and documents or Photos and videos.
  3. Let Dobr delete the original from your gallery, or delete the text file yourself.
  4. Check your cloud backup and delete any copy that already went up. Our guide on keeping photos out of cloud backup shows where to look.

Dobr has no internet permission, so a copy inside it can't be uploaded, synced or sent by the app, even by mistake. It also blocks screenshots inside the vault.

The honest caveat

A phone vault protects against snooping, theft of the phone and leaky backups. It won't protect you if your phone is compromised by malware while the vault is open. For large amounts, keep the phrase offline and treat a phone copy as a convenience, not your only backup.
